Scurry League Rules

FGASL Scurry Rules

  1. In 2022 – during its inception – the Field & Game Australia Scurry League (FGASL) is open to all dog breeds.
In subsequent years the intention is to limit entry to recognised gundog breeds only (including crosses where both breeds are recognised) as the league is seen as an additional benefit in supporting the training and use of functional hunting retrievers, for which use of established breeds are most appropriate.
This rule is to be reviewed by the FGASL Sub-Committee in 12 months’ time.
See the full list of gundog breeds at: https://ankc.org.au/Breed/Index/3
  2. In 2022 – Cost of entry is $3 per run, or $10 for 4 runs. There is no limit on entries – however should the organisers feel that excessive competing of a dog may be injurious to that dog’s wellbeing an entry will be declined.
  3. Only one prize place per dog and handler, per scurry (e.g. the Long Retrieve would be one scurry) per day.
  4. Prize categories are to be specified at each scurry event, but may include prizes for Open and Junior handlers, Open and Novice dogs, and prizes for different length or complexity i.e long, short, multi-retrieve, over water etc.
  5. A dog may not win more than one prize per individual scurry (per day), even with a different handler. If a handler wishes to run a dog that has already run with a different handler, it may be permitted at the discretion of the FGASL official – but will not be eligible to place/win a prize.
  6. The Junior handler competition is open to those 16 years and under on the day of the scurry.
  7. To enter the Novice competition, the handler and dog must not have been placed in a scurry event previously.
  8. Scurries will be conducted in an order set out in the Field & Game Australia Scurry League participation guide.
  9. All scurry types are timed events. When the dog moves over the line, the clock starts. Each return over the line (with the decoy) stops the clock. The fastest dog wins.
  10. Some scurries may include a distraction or a specified order of retrieving. In such circumstances, if the distraction or a retrieve is picked out of sequence then the run/entry is void.
  11. Handlers must always follow the directions of the timekeeper/FGASL official. Do not send the dog until told by the timekeeper/official that you can.
  12. If a dog ‘runs in’, then the run/entry is void.
  13. No harsh handling of dogs is permitted; mistreatment will not be tolerated.
  14. Anyone knowing of their dogs being in contact with infectious diseases must not attend the scurry.
  15. Bitches in season will not be allowed to participate in the competition.
  16. Any dishonest or discreditable conduct will result in disqualification.
  17. The organiser’s decision in relation to any matters arising is final.
  18. The FGASL Sub-Committee can change the rules only if problems arise with the current rules.
