2023 Victorian duck season comes to a close

Published Wed 31 May 2023

With the 2023 Victorian duck season having come to a close on Tuesday, May 30, Field & Game Australia would like to take a moment to thank our members who hunted responsibly and were rewarded with delicious and healthy food to share as they also made precious memories alongside family and friends in our great outdoors.

The well regulated, responsible and sustainable practice of duck and quail hunting has seen unprecedented attacks from some this year, who seem to need reminding that game bird hunting is a legal activity. In spite of this, the vast majority of hunters took the time to get out in the field, although many were forced to hunt private land and less frequented areas to avoid the unlawful conduct of ideologist “protestors”.

Hunters were respectful and helpful when approached by authorities, and for the most part conducted themselves well – so our thanks goes out to them.

A reminder that the 2023 duck and quail seasons are still under way in Tasmania (ducks until June 12, and brown quail until June 25) and South Australia (ducks until June 25, and stubble quail until July 30) – and if you’re looking to get away for a hunt, opportunities still abound in those states and we encourage our members to take those opportunities as much as they are able to.

Game bird hunting inquiry

In February, an inquiry into the native bird hunting arranagements was announced by the Victorian Government.

Field & Game Australia made a comprehensive submission to that inquiry, and also to a similar game bird hunting inquiry in South Australia.

The Field & Game Australia submission to the Victorian game bird hunting inquiry can be found here.

Our submission to the South Australian game bird hunting inquiry can be found here.
