Pattern Testing
Pattern Testing
Field & Game Australia is calling on all members to become more skilled, confident, and responsible hunters by recognising the importance of pattern testing.
Pattern testing is a valuable practice—not only for clay target competitors fine-tuning their load and choke combinations, but especially for game bird hunters preparing for the season with non-toxic shot. It allows hunters to properly assess how their shotgun, choke, and ammunition perform together, helping to ensure clean, ethical harvests in the field.
According to the Game Management Authority, “All hunters should know their maximum effective shooting distance. Shooting beyond this distance will more often than not result in a wounded bird. Generally, most hunters have a maximum effective shooting distance of no more than 30 metres.”
By shooting a chosen barrel, choke, and shotshell combination at a target, hunters can see how the pellets spread and determine whether the setup is suitable for the species being hunted. This knowledge provides confidence in the field and supports responsible hunting.

Pattern testing is a simple step that can help all members become the best hunters they can be.
For more information, refer to the Pattern Testing section of the Shotgunning Education Program Handbook (page 24).
We encourage members to contact their local branch to participate in pattern testing. If your branch does not currently have a testing station available, please contact our Hunting & Conservation Manager to discuss options:
