FGA's position on the 2024 duck hunting season

Published Wed 10 Jan 2024

This year, the Victorian Game Management Authority is not seeking formal submissions regarding the 2024 duck hunting season but is nevertheless open to receiving additional data.

We've made sure to clearly state our position.

We are fighting tirelessly for a future where game bird seasons in Victoria are governed by solid science, not political agendas or arbitrary decisions.

Here’s a sneak peek of our key points:

Advocacy for scientific models: The future must contain science-based season setting – without subjective meddling in seasons. While the current Interim Harvest Model is far from perfect, FGA is advocating for fair, data-driven season regulations.

Opposition to political interference: We insist on decisions based purely on science.

Timely season announcements: Pushing for well-timed communication for our community.

Sustainable hunting practices: We support the balanced approach of the Prowse report.

Enhanced stakeholder engagement: Advocating for transparency in who has a say on decision-making.

Reducing waterfowl wounding: We are committed to ethical hunting and animal welfare.

8am start time and Wednesday opening: FGA challenging the necessity for these, and is seeking GMA's trial findings.

Hardhead ducks and quail season: We are calling for a re-evaluation of Hardhead ducks and assurance on the quail season.
