The Tasmanian Government is currently seeking feedback on the Firearms Amendment (Miscellaneous) Bill 2026. The public consultation period closes on Friday 7 August 2026.

The proposed legislation, including reclassification, citizenship provisions and the potential introduction of firearm ownership caps that would require a buyback of affected firearms, represents one of the most significant issues facing Tasmania's firearms community.

It is important that the collective voice of our membership is heard. The more well-considered submissions received, the stronger the message to Parliament that these proposals have widespread community concern.

The consultation bill should be read in conjunction with the consultation information sheet that is available on the website that outlines the background and the proposed amendments, and the prepared question and answers.

The keys to an effective letter are:

·         Be respectful, even if you strongly disagree.
·         Say who you are and where you are from.
·         Explain your personal connection to shooting, hunting, farming, clubs or outdoor recreation.
·         Keep the letter focused and easy to read.
·         Choose three or four key points rather than trying to say everything.
·         Ask them clearly not to support the proposed changes.
·         Ask for a written response.
·         Edit any template so it sounds like you.
